Amsterdam RAI posts €134 million profit

Amsterdam RAI, Hollands leading meeting venue, hailed a ‘good’ performance in 2011 - despite a fall in profits and a dip in income from corporate events.   Major exhibitions and congresses lifted turnover to €134 million, an increase of 7.1 per cent on 2010 and 23.8 per cent higher than in 2009 which had a similar event calendar. But profits were down across the board. Operating profit fell from €11.6 million in 2010 to €8.3 million while net profits were down from €5.7 million to €3.4 million. A RAI spokeswoman added: “In 2011 we definitely saw that there were not as many events organized for employees of companies. We still facilitated big corporate events like Microsoft at Amsterdam RAI, but we saw a small decline. The association business is still going strong.” However RAI hosted marginally more meetings – 595, as opposed to 590 – and visitor number were up 200,000 to 1.6 million. Amsterdam RAI-organised exhibitions in India, China, the USA, Poland and Turkey made significant contributions to the 2011 figures, which are expected to be surpassed this year. “Amsterdam RAI expects a higher turnover and net profit in 2012”, said CEO Hans Bakker. It is likely an expanding RAI will stay at the Europaplein for the long term. Work on the ‘Scheldeplein building’ is scheduled to start next year, adding a conference centre with restaurant to its premises.
