Starting shot for the Lauwersoog World Heritage Centre

The publication of the design by the Danish architect Dorte Mandrup was the official starting sign for the further development of the Waddenzee World Heritage Centre in Lauwersoog. The centre in Lauwersoog is expected to open in June 2020. A "Wadhall" and a new hotel will also be built as part of the WHC. Innovative entrepreneurs can establish themselves in the Wadhall. The hotel, with a 50-room capacity, will also have a restaurant and a café.

Science & Experience Centre

The new World Heritage Centre will combine sustainability with education, research, entrepreneurship and experience. It will be a Science & Experience Centre in which the Wad plays a primary role in all its facets. The building will house changing exhibitions about the Waddenzee World Heritage, the Lauwersmeer and Schiermonnikoog national parks and the history of the creation of the Waddenzee area. A panorama deck will also be built, with a view over the Wad, and the centre will serve as a departure point for excursions. Knowledge institutions will also perform research into biodiversity in the Waddenzee area, collaborating with other research centres in the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark. The Pieterburen Seal Centre will also have a location in this new centre. The total investment in the centre is more than €29 million. The World Heritage Centre is expected to attract at least 150,000 visitors each year.
